D&AD Final Designs

These are the final designs for a contemporary range of packaging for The Body Shop, designed to unite their brand values with the premium nature of the products.

We felt that it was very important for the packing to be earth friendly and sustainable.  After in depth research we decided that the best direction to take would be to create containers that could be used again, either for cosmetics or around the house as general purpose containers.

The clear, recycled glass gives a fresh and clean look to the product, whilst the designs are delicate and light in appealing colours. The font we have used is 'Opera-Lyrics-Smooth' a font that is reminiscent of the letterpress technique and gives a traditional, rustic look.

The containers would be kept indefinitely and often displayed around the home so we felt it was important to make The Body Shop logo obvious and non-removable.  Using glass embossing the logo and pattern relevant for each fragrance would be created as a permanent feature within the container using organic inks to create the colour.

For the White Musk, Tea Tree and Body Butter products a small round label, inspired by the shape of The Body Shop logo, will be attached to the neck of the container by a hemp string.  The attached label is made from recycled brown paper to reflect The Body Shop's brand values and uses double sided printing to include all the necessary information.

Body Butter
Sweet Lemon
The Body Butter jars are inspired by preserving jars.  Because these jars are designed to keep food fresh for long periods of time we know they will keep the product fresh.  This shape will stack well on shelves and will show what the product is from a side angle, something the current Body Butter pot does not show.  The attached label shows all information needed, including ingredients, The Body Shops' details and that they are against animal testing.  the other side of the label shows the product name and fluid measurement.
For this product and other products that use the preserving jar shape there is a possibility for a refilling scheme, allowing a customer to bring in their empty container for either a discount on another item or to fill with the same product for a reduced price.

White Musk
Eau De Toilette
This product required a pump spray fitting so we opted for a soft shaped glass bottle with an attached spray and plastic lid.  There is a label attached containing information.  The blue flowers circling the bottle are permanently on the glass and are inspired by the White Musk Flowers.

Tea Tree
Face Mask
The Tea Tree Face Mask uses the same preserving jar packaging as the Body Butter and follows the same conventions, however this jar is slightly smaller, to fit 100ml.  For all Tea Tree products there would be a green leaf pattern encircling the bottom of the product.

Foundation
Oil Free Balancing Foundation SPF15
The foundation was designed slightly differently, we have kept the recycled glass container but felt that an attached label would not suit this product, therefore we have used a simple design on the front of the bottle and have used pressure sensitive labels to achieve a subtle 'no label' look for the rest of the information.

D&AD Decisions

We have all tried some different design ideas over the Christmas break and today we have looked at each others to decide which elements work well and which do not.    We are all keen on using a raw cardboard to make the product look more ethical and we think that colour is also important.  Joana has used a letterpress font which works really well with cardboard.

My designs are below, I have used a cardboard texture to show how they will look, I would like to use an embossed enamel effect for the images and text.  I've experimented with a line drawing effect which looks delicate and feminine and carries across the different products well.  The text and over all design, however, does need more work on it so we will now look at combining our ideas and developing them.

As a group we have talked about the different shapes of the bottles, we have decided to keep the shapes simple in a way that can be made out of cardboard.  The brief seems to be more concerned with the label designs so we did not want to spend too much time on bottle shapes.  Now they are decided and we know which products we are designing for it is easier for us to go away now and work on the label designs.

D&AD New Ideas

Our designs have changed a lot following recent tutorials.  We have decided to use much more lasting containers, that can also be recycled as well.  The products will be made mostly from recycled glass.
The products Body Shop currently puts in tubs will now be put in preserving jars.  These jars will keep the products fresh and can also be used for food or any number of things after the product has been used up.  We will put a pattern and Body Shop logo directly onto the glass, this way when the jar is used around the house, it will still have the logo on it.
Another option we considered with this new design is the idea of refills.  Many other shops currently offer a refill system where the consumer may return and fill an empty pot with a product for a fraction of the original price.  We have not yet discussed the logistics of this but it is an idea we feel embraces may of Body Shop's principles.

D&AD

We have developed our previous ideas trying to incorporate the details that would be needed on the packaging.  I have used the french translation as Body Shop use both English and French on their packaging so that it can be sold in Europe and Canada.  I have also included details like ingredients, copyright information and a barcode.

Joana and Natasha's designs are also very organic with a cardboard background so we are all working with a very similar theme.  This week we will decide on which images to use and which fonts work best.

D&AD Progress

We have discussed our separate research and ideas and have made some initial decisions about our designs.  We have decided that the packaging will be predominantly cardboard which will be coated inside to make sure the product stays fresh, the packaging will also be recyclable.  The current Body Shop packaging is really fresh looking and recognisable, however it does not seem to show Body Shop's values.  We have decided to solve this by using textured card and green.  We will also create a variety of different kinds and shapes of product to make sure we have looked at every possibility.

D&AD

I have now started looking at the D&AD briefs for this year.  I've decided that it would be best to work in a group as together we would have a much wider variety of ideas, and combined we would be able to produce a much more professional outcome.  My group will be with Joana Martins and Natasha Bulley and we have decided to do the Body Shop packaging brief.
We have begun by looking into already existing Body Shop packaging and other packaging that looks interesting and creative.  We have decided that it is important that the packaging will be sustainable and have looked into many sustainable packaging designs.  The factor we need to make sure we remember are that the product needs to stay fresh and not go off, so the packaging needs to be air tight and sealed.
We need to design packaging for four products; a body butter, a White Musk product, a Tea Tree product and a liquid foundation.  The one we feel we will have most trouble with is the foundation as it will need to have a pump on it.
