Four Designers

After a slightly shaky start, (getting to London later than planned after a 5am start and hectic rush hour tubes) we managed to sneak into the auditorium just in time to see the beginning of James and Stuart, from Thoughtful design company's presentation. Their talk was very well thought through and was entertaining as well as insightful. They have worked closely with students in the past and had some really good advice for putting ourselves out there to gain work and enter into the industry. Secondly Lise Brian spoke about her background as a designer.
The next day began with a talk from David Kester, Chief Executive of the Design Council. David's talk looked at design from a perspective based mainly on functionality and how important design is focusing on how design changes has helped save lives for the NHS.
Secondly Simon, Gary and David from SomeOne spoke, they belong to a design group of fifteen designers and base their work around enjoying what they do as much as anything else. They talked controversially about the logo and considered that it is now unnecessary, as much as I can see where this point is coming from I do not agree with it entirely as I believe in many cases logos are still important in company branding.
Finally Mike Dempsey spoke. It was very interesting to see how Mike's work had changed throughout different times to fit with the then style. He did not initially study art, but instead ended up taking evening classes later in life and managed to get where he is by working hard and taking every opportunity, which I found very inspiring.
Although I am now absolutely exhausted I do think it was worth the journey, we were given many useful tips in getting a placement and it was interesting hearing the way in which Design companies work.
